What Is Turf Infill?

Infill is granular material applied to synthetic grass to complete the installation. Infill serves several important functions including keeping the grass from shifting, cushioning, and helping the blades to stand up straight. Without proper infill, artificial grass can quickly become matted and unsightly. Some infills are also designed to help with evaporative cooling.

The Infill Process
Use a drop spreader to distribute the infill material uniformly across the turf. Start at one end of the synthetic grass and work your way across the entire area. Most of our residential turfs will require 2-3 pounds of infill per square foot.

Is is critical to force the infill down into the fibers and thatch of the turf. This is typically done with a gas-powered power broom. These can be rented at any Synthetic Grass Store location, but please call for availability.

Which infill is right for you?
Silica sand is our most commonly used infill, but there are other options for different applications. Please contact us for assistance with choosing the right infill for your project.

Silica Sand
Silica sand is the most common synthetic landscape turf infill product. Silica sand allows the grass blades to stand upright as well as to provide UV protection to the backing material. It also gives the artificial grass a natural feel as it provides additional cushioning, similar to soil in natural grass. Silica can be used in every infill application involving synthetic grass including putting greens. Silica comes in tan or white.

Copper Slag
Copper Slag is a byproduct of the mining industry, and is an eco-friendly infill option. Copper slag is primarily used on nylon putting greens as it is heavier than sand and is dark in color.

Envirofill
Envirofill is another infill that is made of silica infused with Microban®, an antimicrobial agent that helps prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew. Due to its performance, Envirofill is a great choice to help reduce the odor that comes from pet residue. Envirofill is absolutely safe for synthetic turf, pets and kids.

Zeofill
Zeofill is an all-natural volcanic ash that is eco-friendly and biodegradable, so it is safe for pets and children. ZeoFill is a negatively charged honey-combed natural material which absorbs urine and prevents the ammonia from forming a gas which is the main cause of pet residue odor. Zeofill is safe for children.

Safeshell
Safeshell is a proprietary infill made of 100% crushed walnut shells. It will not float, is safe and organic, and helps with evaporative cooling. Safeshell is suitable for lawns, playgrounds, and athletic applications.

Crumb Rubber
Crumb rubber is made from shredded automotive tires and is popular for many synthetic turf applications. The material is often used on athletic fields or combined with silica sand or copper slag.
