Statement on PFAs and Artificial Turf

Does Artificial Turf Contain Forever Chemicals?

In recent weeks, there has been an increasing number of articles, blogs and TV news segments involving the topic of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) within artificial turf. In response to the concerns and misconceptions that have been chronicled about the use of PFAs in artificial turf, The Synthetic Grass Store is taking the initiative to address the matter and provide clarity on the safety of artificial turf.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large and complex group of synthetic chemicals used in consumer products worldwide since the 1950s. PFAS are found in everyday products such as non-stick cookware, clothes, stain-resistant carpets, and food packaging. Since PFAS consist of a strong chain of carbon and fluoride atoms, these chemicals do not degrade easily in the environment and are commonly known as “forever chemicals.” It is essential to understand the science behind PFAS and dispel any misconceptions that may have arisen regarding their presence in artificial turf. Regulatory Compliance: The artificial turfs sold by The Synthetic Grass Store adhere to rigorous industry standards and regulatory guidelines.

PFAs and synthetic turf

The Synthetic Grass Store is committed to ensuring that all our products meet or exceed safety regulations set by relevant authorities. Additionally, our manufacturing partners have recognized the importance of how PFAS can affect the environment and the concerns they cause. Because of the focus on PFAS, our manufacturing partners have either discontinued the complete use of PFAS in their production processes of artificial turf or are transitioning away from their use. Therefore, we currently offer a significant line of turfs that are PFAS free; we will eventually have a full offering of turfs completely free of the chemicals. We continue to focus on prioritizing the safety and well-being of all our customers.

One of the issues that has arisen recently is the use of crumb rubber as an infill within artificial turf. While crumb rubber may release PFAS into the environment, most artificial turf installations for residential and commercial projects include silica and other natural materials. Landscape contractors typically do not use crumb rubber as an infill in their installations, so most projects do not pose a risk to the environment. The Synthetic Grass Store highly recommends homeowners and commercial property owners discuss with their landscape contractors which infills will be applied when installing artificial turf.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

Our commitment to safety extends to ongoing risk assessments and proactive measures to mitigate any potential concerns related to PFAS. The Synthetic Grass Store works closely with experts in the field to stay ahead of emerging developments and continuously evaluates our products to ensure they meet the highest safety standards. Additionally, we work with our manufacturing partners and independent laboratories to ensure the artificial turfs we offer remain PFAS free.

Transparent Communication:

The Synthetic Grass Store values transparency and is committed to keeping our customers and the public well-informed. We encourage an open dialogue about the safety of our products, and we are available to address any questions or concerns related to the use of PFAS. Artificial turf stands out as a sustainable and practical solution for modern landscaping and recreational needs. With benefits ranging from water conservation and minimal maintenance to durability and versatility, synthetic grass has proven its value in creating beautiful, functional, and environmentally friendly spaces. As the demand for sustainable alternatives grows, artificial turf continues to be at the forefront of the green revolution, transforming landscapes and redefining the way we perceive and utilize outdoor spaces.
