Netherlands-based TenCate Grass is launching a game-changing initiative in the U.S. to recycle end-of-life artificial grass. Partnering with Cyclyx and ExxonMobil, the new program aims to address the challenge of recycling synthetic turf efficiently.
This project involves collecting 50 synthetic athletic fields, shredding the turf in a Southern California facility, further reprocessing by Cyclyx in Texas, and utilizing ExxonMobil's advanced recycling facility in Baytown. The result? Raw materials indistinguishable in quality from those made from virgin resources.
This process differs from existing turf recycling programs which typically involve repurposing the old turf for things like batting cages and dog runs.
Cyclyx's role is pivotal, working to increase plastic recyclability from 10% to 90%. The collaboration sets the stage for transforming waste plastic materials into fully circular, high-quality products.
Beyond environmental benefits, this program could reshape the U.S. synthetic turf industry. As TenCate plans expansion, the success of the program in California could mark a turning point for sustainable practices in the synthetic turf sector nationwide.
