Can You Install Artificial Grass On Dirt?

Can You Install Artificial Grass On Dirt?

Turf can be installed over dirt or soil but a leveling base layer is required. Your soil needs to be dug down at least two and a half inches below grade level to accommodate a layer of quarter minus aggregate. This is to ensure a smooth surface and provide proper drainage.

Any grass or vegetation will need to be removed before spreading the aggregate. We recommend a gas-powered sod cutter to remove existing grass. These can usually be rented at your local home improvement store. Vegetation killer can be sprayed at this stage

Approximately one ton of aggregate per hundred square feet will be required, but more may be needed if you have low areas. The aggregate will need to be compacted with a plate compactor or a hand tamper. This will ensure a smooth, hard base for your turf to lay over.

With the right tools and preparation, you can achieve professional results and have a lawn that will provide years of low-maintenance enjoyment. For a complete overview of the installation process, check out our DIY section here
